ACUNS DIssertation Award/Graduate Institute, Geneva Workshop/Turkey conference

From the Academic Council for United Nations Study
The Award
The ACUNS Dissertation Fellowship Award recognizes emerging students of extraordinary potential who have reached the stage of writing an advanced graduate-level dissertation on a topic of direct and demonstrable relevance to the United Nations and/or the UN system. Applications not thus related to the UN and/or UN system will not be considered.
An important component of the Award for its winner is the recognition of excellence that this entails throughout ACUNS’ global community of scholars and practitioners. The Award also includes a monetary component in the amount of $1,500.00 US.
In addition, the winner is encouraged to attend the ACUNS Annual Meeting in that same year, where she/he will be introduced and recognized as the Award winner. In that case, the winner will receive an Annual Meeting registration fee waiver (worth up to $150 of the registration fee) plus an additional award of up to $500 following the Meeting for the reimbursement of related travel and accommodations costs.
The Dissertation Award winner is encouraged to consider in the future submitting some written product to ACUNS’ journal, Global Governance. Use of any materials, however, will be at the discretion of the journal editorial team and the normal peer review process.

Eligibility
Eligible candidates may be citizens of any country and must be entering the writing stage of a Ph.D., J.S.D., or LL.M level degree – for example, a doctoral candidate who has defended her/his dissertation proposal and who has completed the majority of field research, and who now is writing a first draft of the dissertation. It is not intended for students who already have completed, or who are about to complete, the writing, or who are about to defend their thesis (NB for students working in a UK-context of doctoral studies, the Award relates to students who are in the beginning of their final year/year three of registration and are in the process of writing up).
If you have any questions, or are not clear whether your application falls within the guidelines, you should contact the ACUNS Secretariat prior to submitting your application, at admin@acuns.org.
Applicants for the award should already be a student member of ACUNS. Information about joining ACUNS can be found on our website under Join/Renew. If you are an applicant from the Global South whose financial status may preclude them from purchasing a membership, please contact admin@acuns.org.
Applications must be received at the ACUNS Secretariat in full by Thursday, January 14, 2016.
Application Procedure
Applications must include all of the following:
  • The applicant’s dissertation proposal or a similar description of the research, which must be no more than 25 pages (typed and double spaced, including bibliography/citations) in length. The review committee will not examine any submissions longer in length than 25 pages;
  • The applicant’s curriculum vitae;
  • Two letters of recommendation from faculty members who are familiar with the student’s academic work, one of whom must be the applicant’s dissertation supervisor. Only two letters should be provided.
Once your application is submitted, you will receive an email confirming the submission and your two referees will receive an email from ACUNS containing the URL link to the webpage where they can upload their letters of recommendation. This email will also contain the essential details your references will need to complete their portion of this application: your email address that you use in the application and your application ID number.
You will be notified by the online system when a letter of recommendation has been submitted by one of your referees. Your application will not be considered if it remains incomplete by the submission deadline.
The winner will be notified by March 31, 2016. Once the Award has been accepted, ACUNS will notify all other applicants of the final decision, and details of the winning applicant’s project will be posted on the ACUNS web site.
Due to the large number of applications received, ACUNS cannot provide any detailed response regarding the evaluation of any individual application.

The Department of Political Science and International Relations at Maltepe University invites interested scholars and advanced graduate students to submit proposals for the conference below. The event will take place at Maltepe University, Istanbul, May 26 and 27, 2016. Please submit a 200-word paper proposal along with your short bio to:  tugrulk@vt.edu by February 29, 2016.

Objectives and Description:
The conference aims to investigative and examine the emergence, development and transformation of American Foreign Policy towards the Middle East from the 1940s to the present time. United States imperial interests in the region date back to 19th century missionary movements; however, the US began to play a major role in the region right after WWII, with the Cold War Era. In the meantime, the establishment of NATO, declaration of Israeli Independence in 1948 and the creation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict created chaotic political dilemmas for the US as well as for regional alliances. In addition, the reliance of the American economy on oil, and it support for Israel transformed US foreign policy into a ‘dependent’ Foreign policy. This is shown in the way that interest groups have played a major role in their ability to shape US Foreign Policy in the region. In this conference, we examine the emergence, development and transformation of American Foreign Policy Toward the Middle East since the 1940s and in doing so, we will examine Iranian, Turkish, Israeli and Arab perspectives. We would therefore like to see the following themes in the papers:

Emergence and Development of American Foreign Policy Towards the Middle East
American Foreign Policy Towards the Middle East in the Cold War and the Post-Cold War Eras
American Foreign Policy Towards Iran
American Foreign Policy Towards Turkey
American Foreign Policy Towards Israel
American Foreign Policy Towards the Arab States

THE CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS WILL BE PUBLISHED IN AN EDITED VOLUME

Caucus chair Braveboy-Wagner recently visited with members and professors at the University of Mumbai to work out details of a potential mini-workshop to be held in 2016.  The Department of Civics and Politics, located in the relatively new Pherozeshah Mehta Bhavan and Research Center Building has advanced technological facilities and all the required skills available to host such a local-regional workshop. We will of course keep you informed about this event as planning continues.

Dear All:
Thank you all so much for your comments and votes on the honoree for the Atlanta Convention. The vote was overwhelmingly for Amitav Acharya but I should note that there were votes for Navrita Behera and for Yoichi Mine as well. Amitav is of course a familiar face and most of you  made specific mention of his contribution to our cause at ISA. We DID send him a thank you plaque after the Singapore conference but we are happy to officially thank him for his work in and outside ISA in Atlanta.
Please note that the luncheon will be held on Friday at 11.30 to 1, just as it was in New Orleans. We expect to be able to accommodate some 30 persons so it will be on a first come first serve basis as usual. Thank you in advance for marking off your calendar.
We are planning to pay posthumous tribute to Geeta Chowdhry. As we noted last year in the blog,

The GSCIS wishes to express its (belated) condolences to the family of Dr. Geeta Chowdhry. Geeta was listed as one of our senior advisors, was an active member of ISA, and friend/proactive and energetic professional colleague to many of us. She was a professor and former chair of the Department of Politics and International Affairs at Northern Arizona University. She died while in India with her family on Jan. 13, 2014 at the early age of 57.

If you have anything specific you wish to say about Geeta, please let me know.

Best,
jbw

News

JBW has just returned from India where useful discussions were held with the University of Mumbai concerning their interest in holding a mini-workshop on the global south. This would be an exciting opportunity to focus on the rising or emerging south while IN an important part of the south. More information will be provided as things develop.
Meanwhile, negotiations are underway regarding possibly holding the Third GSCIS conference in Cuba. Again, more information will be made available shortly.
We continue to apologize for the lack of a summer newsletter. We plan to combine it with a fall newsletter and will send that out in November. Thank you for your patience.

Distinguished Scholar Nominee -Please send in vote/comments by October 30.

Dear Friends:
Atlanta 2016 is around the corner and we need to  decide rather quickly who will be our nominee this year. As you know, we rotate geographically so this year we would like a nominee from Asia. Please note that the person can be doing any kind of work that is relevant to the south; in other words, a scholar from Asia does not have to be doing work ON Asia. The idea behind geographical rotation is simply to ensure that IR scholars around the south are recognized.

The following have been nominated this year:

1) Professor Amitav Acharya, for his work on non-Western theories/ perspectives of IR, particularly Asian IR. Link: http://www.amitavacharya.com/

2) Prof. Mine Yoichi (Yoichi MIne, for his work on Africa, human security and development economics. https://kenkyudb.doshisha.ac.jp/rd/html/english/researchersHtml/110005/110005_Researcher.html
complete CV available from me on request.

3) Navrita Chadha Behera, Professor of Political Science, University of Delhi (India). : http://www.du.ac.in/du/uploads/Faculty%20Profiles/July2014/Political%20Science/Nov2014_Polsci_Navnita.pdf[du.ac.in].

3) Professor Akira Iriye, Charles Warren Research Professor of American History, Emeritus, Harvard University (USA).- works on global community in general. His bio can be found here: http://rijs.fas.harvard.edu/people/faculty/a_iriye.php[rijs.fas.harvard.edu].

Please note that the person you vote for should be familiar with ISA and likely to be able to get to the Atlanta convention, without any financial support from us!

Please contact jbraveboy-wagner@gc.cuny.edu directly with your vote and comments by October 30 The final decision will be made as usual by the Nominations Committee/Executive Committee. Many thanks.

Call for Nominations: Distinguished Scholar Honoree 2016

Dear Members:

First, as we return from the summer vacation, we wish to apologize for the delay in sending you the summer newsletter. A newsletter combination of summer and fall will be sent to you shortly.

Second, we wish to thank all of you who have submitted panel and paper proposals to ISA 2016 for our sponsorship. During the summer, we worked on the program (thank you, Nanette, Program Chair) and the preliminary program, which was recently sent to us for review, looks very broad and inclusive. More on the program as time goes on.

Third, we are still working on the venue for the Third Global South International Studies Conference and will be sending out information as soon as we can.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
 DISTINGUISHED HONOREE: ATTENTION EVERYONE.

As you know, each year the Global South Caucus has honored a distinguished scholar at a luncheon held during the annual convention.
In  this we respect geographical rotation. During our first year the honoree was Professor Ali Mazrui (Africa); second year: Dr. Jomo Sundaram (Asia); third year: Professor Arlene B. Tickner (Latin America); and in 2015 Professor Bahgat Korany (North Africa/Middle East). For 2016 the honor must go to an Asian scholar. (Although Prof. Korany's scholarship spanned the Africa and Middle East region, normally the Middle East will be included in the generic "Asia.")
Even though the Executive Committee makes the final decision, we  like to encourage member input into the selection process as indeed in all our operations. If you wish to nominate someone, please send your choice to: jbraveboy-wagner@gc.cuny.edu by OCTOBER 3.We will then offer all members the chance to comment on the nominees by October 15th, after which the EXCOM will make the final selection.

EXPLANATION AND CRITERIA

The Global South Caucus’ Distinguished Scholar Award is given annually in recognition of the recipient’s exceptional and sustained contribution to global south international studies (defined within the context of the ISA), as reflected both in published works as well as policy contributions. If the recipient is able to attend the ISA convention at which the award is given, s/he will be expected to give a brief address to members, usually at a luncheon event.

General Information

Recipients must meet the Following Criteria

  1. A distinguished record of scholarship and usually a record of policy contributions reflecting a sustained interest in global south affairs. It is not required that the nominee be a member of the ISA but s/he should be at least familiar with the association and usually will have participated in some way in its activities in the past.

Prize

  • The recipient receives a plaque, which is presented at the ISA Annual Convention.

Selection Process

  • The Caucus Executive Committee will review nominations from the membership at large, and select the recipient.
  • The award will be presented during the ISA Annual Convention.

We look forward to receiving your nominations. All nominations should be accompanied by a note indicating why you consider the nominee to be deserving as well as either a link to the person's bio or an appropriate bio summary.

ATTENTION: WISC-AMEI WORKSHOP PROPOSALS CALL; INFORMATION ON AMEI MEETING

Call for Papers

The World International Studies Committee (WISC) and the Mexican International Studies Association (MISA-AMEI) invite applications for the one-day workshop “The Current State and Future of IR Studies in the Global South” to be held at the MISA Conference in Cancun, Mexico, in October 2015.

The workshop aims to enrich WISC’s collective memory and debates about how to improve the global dialogue at the scholarly and institutional levels in the field of International Relations. While this workshop will focus on IR studies in the Global South, it also seeks to build on and continue with the WISC dialogues previously held in Frankfurt and Singapore.  In order to achieve this goal, the workshop will focus on discussing two questions of primary concern:

a) What should be the key themes and the primary theoretical concerns in International Studies in the Global South?

b) How should individual scholars and professional organizations in the Global South contribute to strengthen IR at the national, regional and global levels?

Participants are expected to submit short memos (approx. 3-5 pages) one week ahead of the conference, which should focus on these questions as to the current state and future of IR studies in the Global South. Approximately 8-10 scholars will be invited to attend the workshop on 16 October 2015, 9:00am- 1pm.

This workshop encourages applications from younger scholars coming from or studying in the Global South and Latin America in particular. However, in principle, everybody could apply. Ideally participants will have diverse backgrounds and come from different scholarly communities. IR scholars participating in the MISA Annual Convention are invited to apply. Other IR scholars who are willing to travel to Cancun, Mexico, at their own cost specifically for attending this workshop would be welcome to apply as well.

WISC/MISA will provide a limited number of travel grants, depending on the number of applications and financial needs of the applicants (see attached WISC Travel Grant Application Form). Normally travel grants will consist of two nights in the conference hotel or a small per diem to cover food.  Travel grants may exceed this sum but would then need to be substantiated.

Applicants must provide an abstract of 150-200 words as to how they wanted to address the overarching theme of the workshop and how they are planning to finance their participation.  Applications (CV and abstract) should be addressed to wisc2014@soz.uni-frankfurt.de and contacto@amei.mx by 30 August 2015. Decisions will be communicated by mid-September at the latest.
